Chapter 17

Zinnia

“Get out of my way, Beckett.” I held the vial in the palm of my hand, clutching it to me like it was a lifeline. Indeed, it was a lifeline, not just for me but for Tuck. The glowing pink potion was still warm in my grasp. I wanted to give it to him more than anything.

The rest of the crew was spread out around the infirmary. They were perched on cots and stood in a semicircle next to Tuck. Even Niche and Matteaus stood off to the side watching. Beckett held his hand out in front of himself. “I can’t let you do this.”

Beams of the rising sun glistened in through the wall of windows, giving the already sterile white room a bleached-out shining effect. Each of the cots leading down to Tuck were made up in military style with all the sides tucked in, ready for the next patient. As it was now, he was the only one here. From where I stood just inside the double doors, I could see his breath had gone shallow and the sweat that used to mat his hair was all dried up. His auburn waves fell back from his face in a tangled wavy mess. His eyes darted behind his lids, but his body remained motionless.

I stepped up ready to shove past Beckett and go to Tuck. “We don’t have much time left. I’m giving this to him.”

Grayson moved to stand next to Beckett. “No, you’re not. Why would Ophelia help you now? This could all be a plan to kill our leader.”

Ophelia huffed. “Right, because the smartest thing to do is make a potion that would kill Tucker and stay here in the school surrounded by his crew with no way of escaping. Yeah, that seems absolutely brilliant.”

“Maybe you don’t care if you get away or not,” Grayson shot back at her.

Ophelia rolled her eyes. “Easy there, baby vamp. I wouldn’t want you to get all fangy with me.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “And I’m not going to kill your precious leader. I have every intention of staying in this school, so him being alive is to my benefit.”

“A selfish reason if I ever heard one.” He put his hands on his hips and moved a step closer to Beckett, as though forming a wall.

Kumi, who’d been quietly watching from where she lay on the floor, growled in Grayson’s direction. Can I bite him now?

No, he’s still on our side. I shook my head.

Come on, the vamp needs to know what it feels like to get bitten. She pulled her lips back from her teeth.

“No, Kumi.” I stomped my foot. I had enough to deal with, let alone rogue giant mythological wolf-dog nine-tailed creatures.

She whimpered and put her head back on the floor. You never let me have any fun.

I turned toward Niche. “What do you have to say about this?”

Niche swallowed and pushed her glasses further up her tiny nose. “It’s a risk.” She glanced over at Tuck.
